Follow my progress at http://pdv-motorsports.blogspot.com/ Introduction McG_01 stands for Mr. McGuinness’ (that’s me) first attempt at building an entire car. For FSAE, I was the head of the suspension, DAQ, and brake system design teams on top of my senior design which focused on optimizing our chassis’ stiffness to weight ratio with an Ansys 11.0 program I wrote. Now I will be venturing into the powertrain, aero, and bodywork arenas which scare me quite a bit. I suck at body work and I don’t like it. My motivation is quite simple. I graduated with a great job lined up and I can either plan to purchase a car and spend a lot of money on the 240 to go kinda fast with monthly payments or maintain the 240 as a DD with a few go fast and luxury goodies while designing and building a street legal car that will get me to work and around a track faster than Obama can spend a trillion bucks. My inspiration for this vehicle is a mix between an LMP1, DSR, and a McLaren and my goal is for it to be able to make a failure free trip from Pittsburgh to Wildwood Crest, NJ and back within 3 years. My initial thoughts are outlined below: o Street legal! o 1600lb wet weight with driver o Tubular space frame with aluminum rear box o Rear mounted lightly turbocharged, internally stock Hayabusa with a dry sump (225-260hp) o Either a Quaife, JEFFco, or Nova Racing diff with reverse gear (opinions welcome!) o TransLogic push button shifter w/ manual backup and steering wheel mounted clutch o Custom pedal box, dual master cylinders o Potentially two different sets of suspension mounting points to maintain suspension geometry with a lowered stance on 5-10 track days/year o Push rod SLA with Penske shocks o 3-seat McLaren style enclosed cockpit with center driving position, NAV, and sound system o Standalone ECU for E85 with an option map for E10 o (Probably) Race Technology DL1 data acquisition system w/Dash 2 o Considering a double din car computer to tie everything together inplace of Dash 2
